NIE (foreigner ID number)
Without an NIE it is hard to do almost anything in Spain. We help you get it, whether you are here or in your own country.
What it involves
The NIE (número de identidad de extranjero, foreigner identity number) is the personal number that identifies foreign nationals in Spain. You need it for almost everything: buying or selling a home, accepting an inheritance, paying taxes, signing a contract or opening some accounts. Please note: having an NIE does not mean you have a residence or work permit.

Frequently asked questions
- What is the difference between the NIE and the TIE?
- The NIE is your foreigner number and it doesn't change. The TIE is the physical card issued to people with a residence permit, and it shows that same number. You can have an NIE without having a TIE.
- Can I apply for an NIE if I don't live in Spain?
- Yes, when you have an economic, professional or social reason, such as buying a home or receiving an inheritance. You can apply in Spain or, in many cases, at the Spanish consulate in your country.
- If I have an NIE, can I work in Spain?
- No. The NIE is just an identification number. To work you need a permit that allows it. If that is your case, we explain what options you have.
