EU family member card

If your partner or family member is European, the EU family member card lets you live with them in Spain. We prepare your application so it succeeds first time.

What it involves

The EU family member card (tarjeta comunitaria, officially the residence card for family members of EU citizens) is the document that allows the foreign family member of a citizen of another EU country, the European Economic Area or Switzerland to live and work in Spain. It is applied for after arriving in Spain and, when it expires, it must be renewed or replaced with the permanent card.

Is this your case?

  • You are married to an Italian, French or Romanian citizen who lives in Spain.
  • You are in a civil partnership with a European citizen and you want to live together here.
  • Your EU family member card is about to expire and you don't know what documents to provide.
  • You have been asked for more proof of the relationship or your card has been refused.

How we help

We check the family tie and the European citizen's situation in Spain, because your card depends on it. We gather the documents, book the appointment and go with you to the fingerprint appointment. If your situation changes, for example through a separation or because your family member leaves Spain, we review with you how to keep your residence. We can help you in Spanish, Arabic, Tamazight, French and English, at our offices in Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Málaga and Barcelona or online, wherever you are in Spain.

Your European family member may need the EU registration certificate; and over the years, we help you with the permanent EU card.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the EU family member card and the EU registration certificate?
The registration certificate is for the European citizen who lives in Spain; the EU family member card is for their family member who is not from the EU. It is often best to process them together.
What do I do if my EU family member card is about to expire?
Apply for renewal in good time, before it expires. We check whether your family situation is still the same or whether it is better to move to another permit.
Can I work with the EU family member card?
Yes, generally it allows you to work in Spain as an employee or as self-employed. If you want to set up as self-employed (autónomo), we also help you with that step.
