Social Security

Your Social Security record counts for unemployment benefit, retirement and your papers too. We help you keep it in order.

What it involves

Social Security records your registration as a worker (alta) and the contributions paid on your behalf. That record, which you can check in your work history report (informe de vida laboral), determines whether you are entitled to unemployment benefit, sick pay or a pension. We help you when there are errors, when the company has not registered you or when Social Security decides against you.

Is this your case?

  • A job you really did does not appear in your work history.
  • You were registered for fewer hours than you actually work.
  • You need your Social Security number and don't know how to get it.
  • You worked in another country and want to know whether those periods count here.

How we help

We review your work history and your payslips to spot errors or periods without contributions. We ask for them to be corrected, make a claim against the company if it did not register you, and file the prior claim (reclamación previa) or the court claim when Social Security decides against you. As registration and contributions count in many immigration procedures, such as renewals or arraigo, we also check how they affect you. We can help you in Spanish, Arabic, Tamazight, French and English, at our offices in Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Málaga and Barcelona or online, wherever you are in Spain.

If what you have been refused is unemployment benefit or a pension, we help you with benefits; and if you are self-employed, see Social Security requirements.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know whether my company has registered me with Social Security?
Request your work history report (informe de vida laboral): it shows the companies that have registered you and on what dates. If any period you worked is missing, you can claim it.
What should I do if I have been registered for fewer hours than I work?
Keep evidence of your real working hours: messages, rotas, witnesses. You can report it and ask for your contributions to be corrected, because it affects your unemployment benefit and your future pension.
Do contributions paid in my home country count in Spain?
It depends on the country. Spain has agreements with many countries to add together contributions paid in both, for example for retirement. We check whether your country is one of them.
