What it involves

Quarterly returns (declaraciones trimestrales) are the taxes a self-employed person files with the Tax Agency (Hacienda) every quarter. The most common are declaring the VAT (IVA) on your invoices and making a payment on account of your personal income tax (IRPF), and in some cases also the withholdings you have applied, for example on the rent for your premises. You have to file them even if you have had no income that quarter.

Is this your case?

  • You have just registered and don't know what you have to file or when.
  • You do your quarterly returns on your own and are afraid of making mistakes.
  • You have missed a deadline and received a letter from the Tax Agency.
  • You have an employee or rent premises and don't know how to declare the withholdings.

How we help

You send us your income and expense invoices, we review them and check which expenses you can deduct. We prepare each return, explain the result to you before filing it and file it electronically. If there is tax to pay and you find it hard to meet, we explain options such as requesting a deferral. We remind you of each deadline in good time so nothing catches you by surprise. We can help you in Spanish, Arabic, Tamazight, French and English, at our offices in Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Málaga and Barcelona or online, wherever you are in Spain.

If you want to understand each tax better, see our pages on VAT (IVA) and income tax (IRPF).

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to file the quarterly return even if I haven't invoiced anything?
In general, yes: if you are still registered, you have to file it even if it shows no activity. If you don't file it, the Tax Agency may send you a requirement or a penalty.
What happens if I file a quarterly return late?
A surcharge is normally applied, which is usually lower if you file it yourself before the Tax Agency asks you for it. If you have missed one, contact us and we will regularise it as soon as possible.
Do my quarterly returns help me renew my self-employment permit?
They can help, because they show that your activity is still running and that you are up to date with the Tax Agency. We advise you on which documents it is worth providing for your renewal.
