What it involves

Residence for family members of Spanish citizens is the permit that allows the foreign family members of a Spanish national, such as their spouse, registered partner or children, to live and work in Spain. The key is to properly prove the family tie and, in some cases, dependency or living together.

Is this your case?

  • You have married a Spanish man or woman, in Spain or in your country.
  • You are registered as a civil partnership and your partner has Spanish nationality.
  • Your father or mother has obtained Spanish nationality and you want to live with them.
  • Your card as a family member of a Spanish citizen is about to expire or your renewal has been refused.

How we help

We review your tie and the documents that prove it: marriage or registration certificates, birth certificates, joint padrón registration. We tell you what needs to be legalised or translated and submit the application through the appropriate route. If the authorities doubt the relationship or ask for more evidence, we prepare you to respond. We can help you in Spanish, Arabic, Tamazight, French and English, at our offices in Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Málaga and Barcelona or online, wherever you are in Spain.

If you are not registered yet, we help you with your civil partnership; and in time, you can consider Spanish nationality.

Frequently asked questions

Which family members of a Spanish citizen can apply for this residence?
Usually the spouse or registered partner, the children and, in some cases, the parents. Each situation has its own conditions, so we review your tie and your situation before submitting anything.
I am married to a Spanish woman but I don't have papers. What do I do?
Depending on your situation, it may be possible to apply for residence while already in Spain. Contact us before travelling or starting any procedure, so as not to complicate your case.
If I separate from my Spanish partner, do I lose my residence?
Not always. It depends on how long you lived together, whether you have children and other circumstances. We explain what options you have to keep your residence.
