What it involves

Non-lucrative residence (residencia no lucrativa) is a permit for foreign nationals who want to live in Spain without working here, because they have sufficient financial means of their own. It is common among retirees, people living off investment income or families moving with their savings. As well as the means, health insurance is required, and it is usually applied for through the consulate.

Is this your case?

  • You are retired and want to spend your retirement in the Canary Islands, Málaga or Barcelona.
  • You live off rental or investment income and want to move to Spain with your family.
  • You already have non-lucrative residence and need to renew it by showing that you still have the means.
  • Your visa was refused because the consulate did not accept your proof of income.

How we help

We analyse your income and assets to see how to present them as clearly as possible to the consulate. We help you with the health insurance, certificates and translations, and prepare the complete file. Afterwards we take care of renewals and, if you are interested, your future long-term residence. We can help you in Spanish, Arabic, Tamazight, French and English, at our offices in Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Málaga and Barcelona or online, wherever you are in Spain.

If you want to work remotely, compare it with digital nomad residence; and over the years, we help you with long-term residence.

Frequently asked questions

Can I work with non-lucrative residence?
Generally, it does not allow you to work in Spain, either as an employee or as self-employed. If your plan is to work remotely for foreign companies, digital nomad residence may be a better fit.
Can I apply for non-lucrative residence while already in Spain?
The usual way is to apply through the consulate of your country of residence, with a visa. There are special situations, so we review yours before you make travel plans.
What income counts for non-lucrative residence?
Pensions, rental or investment income, savings and other income that does not come from working in Spain usually count. We review your means and how to prove them to the consulate to avoid surprises.
